Website Audit Process

Takes 10-15 minutes per prospect. Do this before first outreach so you can lead with specific findings.

Step 1 — Performance & Speed

Tool: Google PageSpeed Insights (free)

  1. Paste the prospect's URL into PageSpeed Insights
  2. Run both Mobile and Desktop tests
  3. Screenshot the mobile score — this is your biggest visual impact item
  4. Note the top 3-4 "Opportunities" listed (Largest Contentful Paint, images, render-blocking, etc.)
  5. Record: Mobile score, Desktop score, Load time estimate
ScoreMeaningWhat to tell them
0-49Poor"Your site loads in X seconds on phones — 53% of users leave after 3 seconds."
50-89Needs improvement"Your site has performance issues that are costing you rankings and calls."
90-100GoodSpeed is not their main problem — focus elsewhere.
Step 2 — Mobile Responsiveness

Tool: Google Mobile-Friendly Test (free) + your own phone

  1. Run the URL through Google Mobile-Friendly Test → screenshot the result
  2. Pull up the site on your phone and check:
    • Text readable without zooming?
    • Buttons large enough to tap?
    • Horizontal scrolling? (bad)
    • Images overflowing the screen?
    • Phone number clickable to call?
  3. If the test shows issues, screenshot your phone view for the report
Step 3 — SSL & Security

Tool: SSLShopper.com (free) + browser bar

  1. Look at the URL bar — does it show https:// or http://?
  2. If http://, the browser shows "Not Secure" — screenshot this
  3. Run through SSL Checker to confirm status
  4. Note: "Not Secure" warning causes ~25% of visitors to immediately leave
Step 4 — Content & Basic SEO
  1. Check the page title and meta description (right-click → View Source, search for "title" and "description")
  2. Look for: generic titles like "Home | Welcome" vs. descriptive titles like "Smith Plumbing — Bay City, MI Plumber"
  3. Check copyright year in footer — is it current?
  4. Is there a contact form? Does it work? (Submit a test)
  5. Is there a call-to-action above the fold?
  6. Are there real photos of their work or just stock images?
  7. Is the address/service area mentioned on the page? (local SEO)

Tool for SEO quick check: SEO Meta in 1 Click (free Chrome extension) — shows all meta data at a glance

Step 5 — Broken Links

Tool: Check My Links (free Chrome extension)

  1. Install the extension
  2. Navigate to their site
  3. Click the extension icon — it highlights all links green (working) or red (broken) in seconds
  4. Note any red links for the report
Step 6 — Screenshot & Document
  1. Take a full-page screenshot on desktop (use GoFullPage Chrome extension - free)
  2. Take a mobile screenshot or use Chrome DevTools mobile view (F12 → toggle device toolbar)
  3. Screenshot the PageSpeed score
  4. Screenshot any specific issues (broken form, missing SSL, bad mobile layout)
  5. Save all in a folder: Prospects/[BusinessName]/

Creating the Audit Report

The report is your sales document. It should look professional, be specific, and create urgency.

Quick Report Method — Google Docs (15 minutes)
  1. Make a copy of your PBS Audit Report Template (create this once)
  2. Fill in: Business name, date, your name, their URL
  3. Insert their desktop + mobile screenshots side by side
  4. Insert their PageSpeed screenshot
  5. Fill in the 3-5 specific problems found — use plain English
  6. Write one recommendation paragraph per problem
  7. Add your pricing for the fix at the bottom — give a single number, not a range
  8. Add timeline: "I can complete this in X business days"
  9. Export as PDF
Report template sections: (1) Header with logo + date + prospect name, (2) Executive Summary (2-3 sentences), (3) Screenshot section, (4) Problems Found (numbered list with screenshots), (5) What I'd Fix, (6) Investment + Timeline, (7) Next Step (how to say yes)
Professional Report Method — BrightLocal (20 minutes, looks amazing)

BrightLocal ($39+/mo) generates white-labeled SEO and GBP audit reports that look highly professional.

  1. Sign up for BrightLocal → Create a new "Campaign" for the prospect
  2. Enter their business name, URL, target keywords ("plumber bay city mi")
  3. BrightLocal runs: local rankings check, GBP audit, citation analysis, review monitoring
  4. Export the white-labeled PDF report — add your logo and branding
  5. Pair with your Google Doc for website-specific issues
BrightLocal reports look so professional that many agencies charge $200-$500 just for the audit. You're giving this away free — which creates massive perceived value and demonstrates your knowledge.

Automating the Audit Process

Semi-automated audit workflow (n8n)

Build this n8n workflow once, then trigger it with a single URL:

  1. Trigger: Webhook receives a business URL (you paste it in)
  2. Node 1: HTTP Request → Google PageSpeed API → saves Mobile/Desktop scores
  3. Node 2: HTTP Request → Google Mobile-Friendly Test API → saves result
  4. Node 3: HTTP Request → SSL Labs API (free) → saves SSL status
  5. Node 4: Google Sheets → writes all results to your prospect tracking sheet
  6. Node 5: Gmail → sends you a summary email with findings

The actual screenshots and visual report still need manual assembly, but the data collection is automated. Total time saved: ~10 minutes per prospect.
